Louis Kotzé war 2022 Klaus Töpfer Sustainability Fellow am RIFS und arbeitete an dem Thema Earth System Law for the Anthropocene. Er ist Professor für Jura an der juristischen Fakultät der North-West University, SA, und Senior Professor für Erdsystemrecht an der University of Lincoln, UK. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Menschenrechte, sozio-ökologische Gerechtigkeit und Umweltkonstitutionalismus, Recht und Anthropozän sowie Erdsystemrecht. Er hat über 170 Publikationen zu diesen Themen veröffentlicht. Zu seinen jüngsten Büchern gehören: "Sustainable Development Goals: Law, Theory and Implementation" (2018) und "Research Handbook on Law, Governance and Planetary Boundaries" (2021).
Er ist zudem stellvertretender Herausgeber der Zeitschrift „Earth System Governance", Senior Fellow des Earth System Governance Network, Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Lenkungsausschusses und Miteinberufener der Taskforce on Earth System Law. Im Jahr 2016 erwarb er einen zweiten Doktortitel an der Universität Tilburg in den Niederlanden. Er hat mehrere Forschungspreise erhalten, unter anderem von der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, dem Deutschen Austauschdienst, dem Österreichischen Austauschdienst und der SA National Research Foundation.
Im Jahr 2018 erhielt er ein Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Fellowship der Europäischen Kommission, um ein Projekt an der University of Lincoln mit dem Titel: Global Ecological Custodianship-Innovative International Environmental Law for the Anthropocene zu leiten.
